A hard-paste porcelain third-size Etruscan carafe vase with a chrome green ground, decorated with a cameo in imitation of sardonyx depicting Julius Caesar crowned with laurels in left profile, on a brown ground, within a gilt frame with glossy and matte palmettes, surrounded by two Greek-style gold friezes, palmettes on the neck, large acanthus leaves on the back, and neo-Greek elements on the base. Good condition.

Sèvres Imperial Factory, 1812.

On the reverse, marked with the red vignette "M.Imple de Sèvres 1812".

Provenance

This vase comes from a pair, the second of which is in private hands (Thierry de Maigret sale, June 14, 2017, lot 381).

This pair depicting Caesar and Augustus entered the Sèvres auction house on November 18, 1812, at a price of 400 francs (Vy, 137 v°, 297-36), then was delivered to the Tuileries Palace on December 28, 1812, to be presented as a gift by Empress Marie-Louise on New Year's Day 1813 to Madame la Comtesse Durosnel, née Louise Leclerc Du Brillet, wife of General Durosnel (1771-1849), Count of the Empire and aide-de-camp to Napoleon.
